The Ministry of Labor has signed a memorandum of
understanding with a private company to jointly upgrade the skills of teachers
in the construction sector.
Deputy Director-General of the Department of
Skill Development Wisanu Panaworn said that, in the 2014 fiscal year, the
Department would provide training for nine groups of almost 300 teachers in the
field of construction.
The program is intended to cope with the growth
of investments in the property sector following the establishment of the ASEAN
Economic Community (AEC). Teachers in this field will learn about new
technology for laying bricks. The use of new technology will enable
construction workers to complete their work faster.
Mr. Wisanu said that workers need to upgrade
their skills, especially during this period when Thailand is facing a workforce
shortage in this field. Skill development is also necessary, as the country
prepares for the ASEAN Community, which will be in place in 2015.
The training program will be carried out in nine
provinces, namely Uttaradit and Mae Hong Son the North, Samut Prakan, Rayong,
and Nonthaburi in the central region, Khon Kaen and Ubon Ratchathani in the
Northeast, and Surat Thani and Nakhon Si Thammarat in the South.
Today, many construction projects have been carried
out in all parts of Thailand, particularly those involving the construction of
condominiums and shopping centers.
Mr. Wisanu revealed that, also in 2014, the
Department of Skill Development received a fund of 15 million baht from the
Ministry of Foreign Affairs to provide skill training for the “CLMV” countries.
The CLMV region, which consists of Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, and Viet Nam,
needs assistance from Thailand to help develop labor skills in various fields,
such as the auto sector.
