The Ministry of
Education is preparing steps to organize an event to present the “Princess Maha
Chakri Award” to outstanding teachers from Southeast Asian countries.
On the auspicious
occasion of the celebration of the 60th birthday anniversary of Her Royal
Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn in 2015, the Ministry of Education and
the Teachers Council of Thailand have sought Her Royal Highness’ permission for
the presentation of the award.
Permanent Secretary
for Education Suthasri Wongsamarn said that the presentation of the award was
in recognition of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s great
contribution to the development of education.
The Ministry of
Education of each country in the region, including Thailand, will be asked to
select an outstanding teacher who has devoted himself or herself to education
and whose achievements in human resource development have been well-recognized.
Each recipient of the award will receive a medal and certificate of honor and a
cash prize of 10,000 US dollars.
As for Thailand, all
relevant agencies will be asked to nominate recipients, or applicants, from
teachers in each province. More than 2,000 names from 77 provinces will be sent
to the Ministry of Education, which will select 20 names from this number.
Among the 20 names, three will be selected.
The Ministry of
Education will submit the three names to the Princess Maha Chakri Award
Foundation Committee for a final decision. The committee will select one
teacher from this number as the recipient of the award from Thailand.
Her Royal Highness
Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn will graciously present the awards to all
recipients from Southeast Asian countries in October 2015.
Her Royal Highness,
the third child and second daughter of Their Majesties King Bhumibol Adulyadej
and Queen Sirikit, was born on 2 April 1955. She holds a doctorate in
Development Education and began her teaching career in 1979. Her Royal Highness
occasionally gives lectures at several institutions, and she regularly attends
academic conferences and seminars in both Thailand and abroad.
The principle of
using education as a means of community and social development, together with Her
Royal Highness’ experience in the field, has served as a solid base for her
subsequent involvement in community development activities. In 2000, she was
granted the professional title of "Professor."
Her Royal Highness
was conferred an honorary doctoral degree in Humane Letters by Northern
Illinois University in the United States on 18 September 2013. The degree was
in recognition of her work in promoting education and Thai culture, as well as
her accomplishments in humanitarian efforts.
